Veronica doesn’t think she’s going crazy. But why can’t anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes? When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months.
But the Scottish countryside holds other plans.
Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna’s great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica’s daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they’ve longed for…or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.
DOON is loosely based on the premise of the musical Brigadoon, with permission from the Alan Jay Lerner Estate and the Frederick Loewe Foundation. Follow the journey at www.DoonSeries.com
Special thanks to Zondervan/Blink YA Books for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Doon will be in stores August 20th, 2013.
As soon as I saw this book cover and read the Doon synopsis, I knew I just had to read it! First of all, the cover is absolutely beautiful with its greenery, mysterious mist, and gorgeous gown. Then we have the fact that the book is set in Scotland! Scotland’s on my Places I Wish I Could Visit list, and I had not read a book set in Scotland before, so I was really excited about that. Plus you have the fact that Doon is inspired by the musical Brigadoon! I love musical theatre, so that pretty much sealed the deal that I had to get my hands on this book!
So…what did I end up loving about Doon?
The Scottish Setting
I wish I could quote from the ARC, because Doon contains such gorgeous imagery of Scotland. The different chapters definitely pull you into the scene and create a lush world around you. The descriptions in the book were just amazing! Plus, I loved how the authors wrote the Scottish accents into the dialouge.
The Dual Points of View
I normally am hesitant with dual points of view in a book, because I either a) can’t tell the difference between the two voices because they are so similar, or b) really don’t like one of the voices and want to hurry up to get back to the other voice. However, that was definitely not the case with Doon! Veronica and Mackenna’s voices were equally fun, unique, and well-written. I really enjoyed the dual narration!
The Musical Theatre References
I love theatre, so I was really excited to see that Mackenna loved it too! This book has so many references to musicals and it was a blast to see so many. I got excited every time Mackenna named a musical I loved.
This book has some really cool twists! Like when Veronica becomes spoiler at the spoiler, because she figures out that spoiler! Okay, so I really can’t say anything without giving too much away!
Cynical Cindy Says
I think that I was a bit disappointed because there wasn’t more of the musical Brigadoon in this book. However, this was probably just a ‘it’s me, not you’ case, as the synopsis does say that it was only ‘loosely based’ on the ‘premise’ of Brigadoon.
All in all, whether you’re looking for fantasy, romance, or a fantastic setting, you should pick up Doon!
